On the compatibility of nicotinamide and glycolic acid
The way of skin care, the compatibility of ingredients is very important. Niacinamide and glycolic acid are both famous in the skin care industry, but whether they can be mixed and used is doubtful.
Niacinamide is a derivative of vitamin B. It has many functions, which can block the transfer of melanin and make the skin smooth and shiny; it can also increase the hydration of the stratum corneum and make the skin hydrated; and it can strengthen the skin's barrier and resist external intrusion.
Glycolic acid belongs to fruit acids. Weakly acidic, it can dissolve the bonding substances between the cuticles, promote exfoliation, make the skin smooth and delicate; can increase cell metabolism, make the skin rejuvenated; and can improve the permeability of the skin and help the absorption of other ingredients.
At first, people thought that the two could not be mixed. Due to the acidity of glycolic acid, or the conversion of nicotinamide to niacin, niacin is irritating and can cause skin discomfort, such as redness, itching, etc. However, recent studies have gradually revealed that under certain conditions, the two can also be compatible. If the purity of nicotinamide is high and the pH value of the system is controlled in an appropriate range, about pH 5-7, nicotinamide is relatively stable and is not easy to convert to niacin.
Many experiments have also confirmed it. Appropriate amounts of nicotinamide and glycolic acid are mixed into preparations and applied to skin models and volunteer skin. After testing and observation, no adverse reactions have been found at reasonable concentrations and pH values, and the skin care effects complement each other. Glycolic acid promotes exfoliation, increases the absorption of nicotinamide, nicotinamide helps repair the skin barrier, and retards the stimulation of glycolic acid.
Therefore, it can be seen that nicotinamide and glycolic acid must not be mixed. But when using it, be cautious. Choose high-quality raw materials, control the pH value and concentration, and try it before small areas of skin. In this way, you can improve the strengths of the two, avoid the weaknesses, and achieve the ideal skin care effect.
